FAQ

What is the DUMBO Action Committee?

We are a grassroots coalition of residents advocating for a sustainable future for DUMBO. We exist to protect the cultural soul of our neighborhood while ensuring that development respects the people who make DUMBO what it is.

How is the committee organized and funded?

We are an independent, volunteer-powered organization and remain unaffiliated with real estate developers or political agendas.

What issues does the committee focus on?

How do I get involved?

Sign up for our newsletter, join our Facebook group, follow us on Instagram (@dumboactioncommittee) or contact us via email.

Do you work with the city or elected officials?

We’re independent, but not isolated. We push city officials to serve our community better, and we try to show up at the tables where decisions about DUMBO are being made.

Who represents me in city planning conversations?

We believe you should. That’s why we help residents organize around hearings, proposals, and community board meetings. We’re here to support your voice being heard.

What do I do if I have a neighborhood concern — like noise, safety, or sanitation?

Start with 311 for city issues, but also tell us if you are having trouble resolving the issue. Part of our work is holding agencies accountable and raising awareness around patterns of neglect.

What's being done about the train noise in DUMBO?

We could use your help! The sound levels generated from the trains running over the Manhattan Bridge are downright dangerous. We recently conducted a noise study with the MTA to quantify the issue, and are trying to address solutions directly with the MTA, DOT and our elected officials. If you're interested in joining our efforts, please contact us via email and/or join our Facebook group: Save DUMBO's Ears.

What can be done about the street vendors?

Currently we are working with Councilman Lincoln Restler's office on establishing a DUMBO-focused inter-agency task force to address the illegal and unsanitary vending in the neighborhood.

In the meantime, it is important to continue reporting conditions. Please do the following:

  • Report street vendors that are blocking intersections, double parked, or idling for a long time by using the 311 App or website.  (Of course, if the situation is dangerous, dial 911.)

  • Tweet/X a photo with the hashtags #dumbotraffic and #welivehere.  You can also tag:

  • Report Quality of Life issues from your phone using the NYC 311 app

    • Download "Timestamp Camera Basic" - It will use your camera to add visual timestamps

    • Download "NYC 311"

When you see an issue, like illegal parking, take a photo using the Timestamp app. Then use the NYC 311 app to submit a new request and attach the photo of the issue. Provide contact info and you will get a text and an email acknowledging your submission. When the issue is closed,  you will get another update. If this is a recurring issue, do not hesitate to submit a request every time you encounter it. The more complaints submitted, the more incentive the NYPD or NYC agency will have to solve the problem.
